Yoga Therapy for Back Pain

Yoga Therapy & Back Pain

In the January/February 2025 Consumer Reports magazine the focus was articles on various Natural Cures. Yoga was repeatedly cited as working for pain as well as other health conditions both mental and physical. I started practicing yoga regularly 34 years ago and immediately felt the benefits. Back then, yoga was not really studied using Western scientific methods. Today, there are many studies that prove yoga’s efficacy. As a Yoga Therapist for over 28 years, I have seen it again and again, yoga really works.

One popular field of study for yoga has been yoga and back pain. Consumer Reports reviewed 118 studies on back pain and found that, “the best research seems to be around yoga” citing it as one of the “most effective physical activities for chronic back pain.”[1] This article also discussed Yoga as being great for managing arthritis. Another article by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reviewed studies on back pain and yoga. It stated, “Recent studies in people with mild to moderate chronic low back pain suggest that a carefully adapted set of yoga postures may help reduce pain and improve the ability to walk and move.”[2]
