Heading to the End of Summer

August 2nd marks the half-way point between the Summer Solstice and the Fall Equinox. We are in the latter half of Summer. The weather has recently shifted to be cool at night. You can feel a bit of a Fall preview in the early mornings. The seasons are starting to turn. (I apologize to all you summer lovers, teachers, and seasonal workers out there who maybe do not want to hear this.)

Summer is Pitta season (Fire + Water). In the Summer, heat can easily build in your body and cause a Pitta imbalance. The prolonged heat of the Summer (especially this hot Summer) can act like an oven, drying your body out. This is why, Vata (Air + Space) begins to build in the second half of the summer. Fall is Vata season. If you want to prevent Vata from getting aggravated, you should start to address it now before Vata season is here.

Signs of Excess Pitta

  • ·Feeling over-heated, flushed skin, hot flashes or burning sensations.

  • Hives or inflammation that is red or warm to the touch.

  • Acidity, heartburn, and loose stools or diarrhea.

  • Irritability, overly critical thinking, anger, and aggressive competitiveness.

Signs of Excess Vata

Dryness of skin, eyes or inside the body.

  • Crepitus (popping and cracking of joints), arthritis or decreased bone density.

  • Any pain or increased achiness.

  • Gas, bloating, constipation, or dry stools.

  • Anxiety, fear, insomnia, an overactive mind and nervous system.
